Astigmatism – Collaboration with Richard Phoenix for Makina Books

A commissioned piece by Makina Books, exploring the social model of disability, accompanying and introducing Richard’s incredible paintings. The paintings in Astigmatism are part of a wider documentary project featuring Phoenix’s friends — many of whom are artists in their own right; as well as participants in London’s DIY community.

The paintings in Astigmatism are part of a wider documentary project featuring Phoenix’s friends — many of whom are artists in their own right; as well as participants in London’s DIY community. Made without the aid of lenses (which he wears to correct defective eyesight) the process forced a new approach and way of looking. Macro studies of texture and colour were then re-photographed, edited and arranged across 82 pages; interwoven among the original works and with a new text by Bryony Beynon — framing the ideas contained within the work around embracing imperfection and social models of disability. The resulting bookwork, designed by Robin Christian is presented as a standalone piece of work – also as a document of an ongoing series.
